First-Then Board vs Now-Next-Then Strip: Which to Use?
Same idea, slightly different format. First-then is simpler. Now-next-then gives more orientation in time.
The Short Answer
- First-Then Board: shows 2 steps: the non-preferred task, then the reward
- Now-Next-Then Strip: shows 3 steps: current activity, next activity, what comes after
When to Use Each
Use first-then for ages 2-4 or for the most dysregulated moments. Use now-next-then for ages 5+ when more cognitive load is tolerable.
How to Use Both (If You Need To)
Most families use multiple tools, not one. The trick is using each one for its actual job, not as a replacement for the others. Stack tools, don't substitute them.

These tools are not interchangeable. Pick the right one for your actual problem, and skip them all if what you really need is a different tool entirely. Most parents over-tool the situation. Start with one. Add a second only if needed.
